2022 World Day Against Human Trafficking-in-Persons - ETAHT visits Benin Central Mosque

On Wednesday 27th July 2022, the Executive Secretary of ETAHT, Itohan Okungbowa (Esq) led a team of representatives from the Nigeria Red Cross, Edo State Ministry of Justice, the Edo Women Development Initiative (EWDI) and other relevant bodies on a courtesy call to the Benin Central Mosque as part of the 3-day activities to commemorate the 2022 World Day Against Human Trafficking-in-Persons. They were received by the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdufatah Enabulele.

In her speech, she called on the worshipers to join hands with the Edo State Government to fight the menace of human trafficking in their communities. She noted that the success of the campaign will be largely impacted positively by the cooperation and participation of the citizens and the general public. She also stressed the need for key stakeholders and religious leaders to be fully involved in the fight against human trafficking.

She emphasized the scourge of domestic trafficking which occurs within the country and equally impacts negatively on the vulnerable and their families.

The Chief Imam in his response thanked the task force and its partners for their commitment and the progress made thus far. He gave his assurance to the state government and the task force on behalf of the Muslim community, to continue in the fight against human trafficking. He also committed to establishing sessions on the issues of human trafficking for members of the Central Mosque.
